Siskel & Ebert at 50 presents BREAKING AWAY, Beloved by Gene & Roger

View Official Page

This winning, Midwest-based coming-of-age tale follows four working-class teens in Bloomington, Indiana as they navigate the growing pains of impending adulthood and sign up to compete against the snooty local college kids in the famous “Little 500” bicycle track race. Featuring standout early performances from Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern and Jackie Earle Haley, this modestly-scoped but stirring and warm dramedy was so loved by Gene & Roger that they announced on-air that they’d pay back the admission of any viewer who wasn’t satisfied!

The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), along with the Chicago Film Office, is proud to present Siskel & Ebert at 50, a month-long celebration honoring the 50th anniversary of the groundbreaking television program that forever changed how audiences discuss movies. Each week in November, audiences will experience films that Siskel and Ebert cherished — from Midwest coming-of-age dramas to indie thrillers — and engage with live post-screening conversations featuring acclaimed guest speakers. This film was selected by Thea Flaum, who will be in attendance for a pre-screening discussion.

NOTE: Your RSVP does not guarantee entry. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to availability.
